Architecture in Scale
Presented as part of the 2025 Jia CURATED Festival
Jia CURATED is an immersive weekend of craft, design, and culture. Originally introduced in 2022 as Jia Curated Kiosks, it evolved into Jia CURATED in 2025, expanding its vision and impact. Rooted in the meaning of Jia—home in Chinese—the event explores a new theme each year, fostering connections and dialogue through exhibitions, programmes, and initiatives.
This exhibition gathers together architectural scale models from 24 architectural studios currently practicing across Indonesia. The projects span private homes, public galleries, restaurants, resorts, retail spaces, airports and even a new city master plan—diverse in typology and geography, yet all connected and grounded in the Indonesian context.
These architects—ranging in age, gender, ethnicity, background, and career stage—offer unique perspectives shaped by place, practice and personal evolution. While not all are Indonesian by birth, all live and work here, and together contribute to the ongoing shaping of the nation’s built environment.
Historically, architecture in Indonesia has been used as a tool for nation building and identity making, particularly in its post-independence period. Today, it’s increasingly personal and reflective, rooted in local contexts, challenges and aspirations.
As curator, I acknowledge my position as an outsider—what I lack in academic or historic knowledge of Indonesian architecture, I hope I make up for with genuine curiosity, respect and admiration. My aim isn’t to define or explain, but to offer a platform for voices that deserve space and attention. Each project in this exhibition reflects a shift in thinking—a lesson, a challenge, or a transformation—aligned with the Jia CURATED 2025 theme of evolving perspectives. Through these models, we glimpse the future of architecture in Indonesia, one idea at a time.
